An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of central Indonesia Monday, according to the Usgs, which sent panicked people rushing into the streets but there was no tsunami alert.
The quake struck at 0916 GMT more than 160 kilometers (99 miles) south-southeast of Gorontalo in central Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island at a depth of 18 kilometers. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics agency measured the earthquake at 6.0 at a depth of 10 kilometers.
“The epicenter was in the sea but it doesn’t have the potential to trigger a tsunami,” BMKG official Agung Utomo told AFP.

The 6.1 earthquake shook the ground, according to a manager of a hotel there were 30 people who ran out into the street in a panic. This area of Indonesia is one of the most active earthquake regions in the world, otherwise known as the pacific ring of fire.
Ecuador has issued an orange alert, which is the second highest warning level that can be issued for a volcano. The towns near Tungurahua will be most affected by this volcano, as well as Chimborazo, according to the national civil defense officials.
Increased activity has been building since Wednesday, along with a slight increase in gas emissions from the 5,029-metre volcano, located about 135km south of the capital of Quito, according to the Geophysical Institute.
15,000 people have been evacuated from the area, and are expected to return later next year.
