Earthquakes

Significant earthquakes have slowed down for the most part as of late, with not that many 6.0 or greater earthquakes to report.

A magnitude 2.9 earthquake shook the Jersey area, according to a spokesman, the earthquake could be an after effect of a bigger earthquake that took place in Brittany November.

Volcanic Activity

At the El Hierro volcano in the Canary Islands, earthquakes have slowed down for the time being, however, rapid inflation and harmonic tremors are both signs that an eruption could be imminent.

Extreme Weather

Snow conditions continue for the northern part of the United States as well as southeastern Canada which endured four days without electricity due to ice related power outages. 232,000 customers were left without power due to below freezing temperatures in:

  • Michigan
  • Ontario
  • Quebec
  • New Brunswick
  • Northern New England

18 people have died in weather related events as of Saturday, 13 were United States related deaths due to carbon monoxide poisoning according to officials. – source

December 25th – In Brazil 30 people were killed as the worst floods in 90 years hit the area, with Nearly 50,000 people having to flee their homes as thousands of homes were destroyed, and people were left without any electricity. –source

December 25th – 80,000 homes are still awaiting power in France as record gusts affected the Brittany area. –source

Sinkholes

 

A child fell into a sinkhole today in the Stanton Tenn area but was ok after the incident as crews were able to get the child out. source

The Louisiana sinkhole in Bayou Corne has shown a new crack was found in  the levee. The cracks in this area are in the same spot where previous cracks showed.

Train Accident

In Arlington, a pedestrian was struck and killed a freight train at east Arlington rail crossing just before Christmas Day according

to authorities, the train was approaching the crossing at Great Southwest Parkway and East Division Street as the woman attempted to cross the tracks. The train was moving at 50 mph as the Regina Brown age 54 was crossing. – source

Mystery Booms Heard

At around 11 p.m on Christmas Eve people have reported hearing a loud boom in Toronto, Newmarket Aurora, Belleville, Richmond Hill, and Sutton.The boom rattled homes, as those living in the area believed that a tree had fallen on their homes. –source

A total of 22 fireballs have been reported for 12-26-2013, we have a staggering 226 pending reports of fireballs still under investigation by the american meteor society at the time from the following states:

AZ, CA, FL, IA, IL, KS, MD, MI, MN, MO, NE, OH, OK, TX, VA & WV and one other report from Spain. We will update on some of the most significant reports of fireballs, as this is one of the ongoing stories to watch for sure. – source

The all sky fireball cameras over at nasa have a total of 24 fireballs to report, 21 sporadics and 3 December Lonis Minorids at the time.

  1. I’m working on a souilton, expect an update soon.I couldn’t yet reproduce the background issue. But I suspect it has something to do with saving preferences. The app reads the preferences from an xml file after each update (they can get lost otherwise). It looks like in your case they either aren’t saved properly or get reset. I believe the former. I don’t know why though, lack of space or no write permissions?Yes I agree the USGS source is the best one. I was thinking of adding alternative sources in addition to this one, however that is more work so it’ll be something for the long term.
