Volcanic Activity

The following lists updated volcanic activity for 2/2/2013:

Etna (Italy): After an entire day with ash emissions from the New South East crater and at times from Bocca Nuova, another eruptive episode with strong strombolian activity took place over night with both the New South East crater and Bocca Nuova. This is the 8th eruptive episode during 2013.

White Island (New Zealand): There has been increased tremor activity in the area with many interspersed earthquakes.

Iliamna (South West Alaska): There was a swarm of earthquakes that started as of yesterday near the Iliamna volcano. There was a 3.7 earthquake that took place this morning, 30 km to the

east, this was the strongest event in the new pulse of seismic activity so far.
Colima (Western Mexico): There were small explosions, rockfalls, as well as short pulses of tremors in the area, along with volcanic earthquakes. New lava is also accumulating inside the new crater left by the large explosion on Tuesday.

Popocatepetl (Central Mexico): The activity has remained stable for this volcano, showing a glow from the summit indicates slow supply of magma to the lava dome. The rate of emissions has climbed a bit to almost 2 per hour on average.

Fuego (Guatemala): The effusion rate has increased again today, with the old lava fow headed towards the Taniluya canyon, and gaining strength again.

San Cristobal (Nicaragua): Intermittent phases of continuous volcanic tremor have started to appear at the volcano.

Machin (Colombia): There were strong gas emissions seen in the latest NOAA SO2 image for the area. The Seismic activity has been low, but small volcanic earthquakes continue to take place.

Reventador (Ecuador): Activity at this volcano remains strong, with the new summit lava dome that continues to grow and produce explosions. During the afternoon of January the 31st, a strong emission column of steam and moderate ash content could be seen rising 3.5 km just about the crater area.

Tungurahua (Ecuador): There was a steam column which rose about 100 m during the afternoon of January 31st. Seismic activity remains at medium levels,

with a tendency of a slow increase.

Copahu (Chile): Seismic activity has decreased and no new surface activity has been observed.

More Than 40 Sinkholes Open Up And The City Can’t Fix Them

harrisburg sinkholes

The city is struggling to fix may of the sinkholes that have opened in Harrisburg, with one particular sinkhole causing

dozens of residents to loose access to utilities and have to evacuate the area. The city is also having financial problems, with not being able to receive loans:

“We can’t do anything right now because no one will lend to us,” William Cluck, chairman of the city agency that oversees the water-treatment facility, told the Journal.

The daily mail article continues by stating that the city could default on its debt burden, and is unable to tap into the municipal debt market, which cities and states use to finance their infrastructure, which includes bridges, roads and tunnels.

It would cost the city half of Harrisburgs $50 million dollar budget to fix all 41 of the sinkholes in the area.
