Earthquake Activity

An earthquake that measured 4.5 on the Richter scale took place in the Turkish part of the Black Sea newar Istanbul, the agency “Anatolia” announced on Tuesday.
The earthquake was felt in Istanbul. There were no reports of damages, injuries or loss of life. The country of Turkey is located on a very active seismic zone.

In Beijing a 4.2 magnitude earthquake jolted Ning’er Hani and Yi Autonomous County, southwest of China’s Yunnan Province, at about 9:47 a.m on Tuesday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter for the quake was at a depth of 5 km. At 11:47 there was a 4.8 earthquake that took place again with a depth of 5 km, according to the CENC agency.

Yesterday a large 6.1 earthquake hit the Bristol Islands, with no tsunami warnings or reports of damages to buildings or loss of life.

 Volcanic Activity  

El hierro in the Canay Islands has had more than 90 earthquakes measuring from magnitude 2.0 – 4.0 today. Explosions sending ash plumes 8,000 feet into the air have taken place at the Batu Tara volcano in the sunda Islands in Indonesia.

At the White Island volcano in New Zealand shows internal unrest in the form of continuous volcanic tremor has further risen and numerous earthquakes have appeared during the past hours.

At the Santa Maria volcano in Guatemala, a phase of increased ash emissions have taken place at the Santiaguito volcano. VAAC Washington alerts about an ash plume at 16,000 feet, which is about 5 km in altitude drifting east from the volcano.

A seismic swarm continues until this morning, then waned a bit, but has increased in strength.

In Machin Colombia, there has been seismic unrest, but there is no surface activity.
A swarm of low-frequency volcanic quakes during the night of March 17 -18th.

There has been a phase of increased seismic activity with the Nevado Del Ruiz volcano in Colombia.

 Rains Leave 20 Dead In Brazil

At least 20 people have died in landslides in a mountainous area north of Rio De Janeiro, after heavery rains have caused landslides.

In the city of Petropolis, about 40 miles north of Rio, after a river burst its banks and flooded the city centre.
A baby and two emergency worker were among the victims in this incident.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said more “drastic measures” may be needed to remove people living in areas of risk who ignore warnings.

“Our prevention system warns the people,” she told Brazilian media in Rome after a meeting the head of Food and Agriculture Organization, fellow Brazilian Jose Graziano.

 Louisiana Sinkhole Update


In other sinkhole news, the Barricades have been placed around a sinkhole that developed on Tuesday afternoon. Apparently a sewer line collapse on Tuesday.


A contractor has been called to the scene to make repairs, but Koester wasn’t sure on Tuesday afternoon on how long it would take before the work is completed.
