8.0 Earthquake hits the Santa Cruz Islands with a 6.4 and 5.4 aftershock at the time of writing this news release. In the earlier part of the day there was also a 6.3 earthquake that hit the Lata Solomon Islands. There is currently a Tsunami warning that was issued for the South Pacific area.
Live Update: a 5.7 and a 5.6 earthquake has just hit the area, these are aftershocks. As more news is released we will have an update for our readers. There probably will be more aftershocks as this earthquake took place about 19 minutes ago.
The U.S Geological Survey says the 8.0 earthquake struck Wednesday 81 kilometers (50 miles) west of Lata, in the Solomon islands, at a depth of 5.8 kilometers.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says the tsunami warning is in effect for the Solomon islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrea, Fiji, Kiribati, Wallis and Futuna.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre the earthquake cause a “destructive tsunami” near its epicenter There was also a surge of 3 feet recorded in one part of the Solomon Islands.

Live Update: The powerful 8.0 earthquake has generated a 4 foot tsunami Wednesday, and prompted warnings to several island nations.There was no damage that was
immediately reported in the Vanuatu area.The waves could threaten more coastal areas and could be destructive.
“People are still standing on the hills outside of Honiara just looking out over the water, trying to observe if there is a wave coming in,” said George Herming, a spokesman for the prime minister.
